Teen arrested for illegal AK47 possession
DURBAN, (CAJ News) – A KwaZulu-Natal teenager has been arrested for allegedly possessing an unlicensed AK 47 rifle and some rounds of ammunition.
The weapons are suspected to have been used during a recent robbery at a local school.
The arrest of the 17-year-old follows investigations by Mahlabathini police into the burglary.
Two males aged 18 and 25 had earlier been arrested for the incident at the school in Xolo Reserve.
Earlier this week, police investigations led the investigating officers to a homestead where the teenager was arrested.
During the arrest, the suspect was found in possession of an AK 47 rifle with 21 live rounds of ammunition and property suspected to be stolen from the school during the burglary.
He was charged for possession of an illegal firearm after he failed to produce a license.
The suspect has been taken to Mahlabathini police for detention where he has been charged and released into his parents’ custody.
He was scheduled to appear in court on Friday while the recovered firearm will be subjected for ballistic testing to ascertain if it was used in the commission of other crimes.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, applauded police on the arrest.
“The seizure of this firearm will assist us in solving other pending cases,” she said.
