JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – THE upcoming Africities Summit confirms the confidence that Africa has in the City of Johannesburg and South Africa as a whole, Mayor Parks Tau said.

He said hosting the event also served to cement the social, political and economic integration of the country to the rest of the continent.

The summit is scheduled for November 29 to December 3.

“Johannesburg is both ready and honoured to host the seventh Africities Summit. We have pulled out all stops to ensure a warm Jozi welcome awaits the thousands of representatives of Africa’s local government authorities expected to descend on our City,” Tau said.

He said the selection of Johannesburg as the host city gives the city an opportunity to showcase and fine tune its wide-ranging developmental programmes as outlined in its Growth and Development Strategy 2040 to create a liveable and sustainable city.

Meanwhile, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister, Pravin Gordhan, said Africities would look at creative answers to problems currently facing local governments across the continent.

“As the sphere closest to the people, effective local government is critical for ensuring that citizens have a positive experience of government. It is when people are given the opportunity and resources to meaningfully participate in the affairs of their local governments that we can achieve the vision of a truly empowered and liberated people of Africa,” said Gordhan.

That’s Sandton! Why not host your conference in “Joburg” central and show Africa a how your ANC have turned this once proud city into a first class slum Mr mayor and stop pretending and riding the backs of the “capitalists” your party and regime so despise?
