Battle on for ABSA Premiership top spot

bidvest_resized_1JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – SURPRISE ABSA Premiership log-leaders Platinum Stars stand a chance of extending their lead when they host Bidvest Wits in Rustenburg on Wednesday evening.

Stars lead the 16-team log with 18 points from eight games played. Interestingly, Wits are fifth despite having a point less.

Thus, Wits can always claim the top spot if they win.

Elsewhere, fourth-placed Mamelodi Sundowns also have a chance of going top when they visit eighth-placed Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay in Port Elizabeth.

Sundowns have 17 points from nine matches played, but a victory tonight would see them move to the top of the log provided Platinum Stars and Bidvest Wits draw in their encounter.

The results involving the sides placed higher than Downs will determine if the Pretoria side go top.

Sixth-placed Bloemfontein Celtic have a chance to consolidated their position at the expense of hosts SuperSport United at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Tshwane.

United are 11th with nine points, six less than the visitors.

The other remaining premiership match for Wednesday pits bereaved Ajax Cape Town and rejuvenated Orlando Pirates in Cape Town.

Bubbling with confidence following their 3-1 drubbing of Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday in the Soweto Derby, Pirates go into this crucial match well motived, though they will content with a formidable Urban Warriors who are playing their first match after the recent death of defender Cecil Lolo in a car accident.

Ajax lie ninth with 11 points, three more than Pirates who are wallowing in 13th.

All matches kick off at 1930hrs.

Meanwhile, defending champions Chiefs massacred Golden Arrows 3 – 1 in a league match played at FNB Stadium on Tuesday night.

The victory temporarily moved Chiefs to the third position with 17 points from 10 games.

Mpumalanga Black Aces also thrashed Jomo Cosmos 3 – 1 to move to second spot while Maritzburg United lost 2 – 3 to Polokwane City.
