Joburg holds prayer for murdered police

JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – THE City of Johannesburg will on Thursday hold a Mass Prayer Day in honour of police officers killed in line of duty.

People drawn from churches, human rights groups, police, students and local residents are expected to attend the event is scheduled for the Standard Bank Arena.

City of Johannesburg’s Group Communication and Marketing Officer, Nkosinathi Nkabinde, said the event aimed to raise awareness on the importance of police presence in communities.

He said the Mass Prayer Day would pray for victims of the crime committed this past weekend at the Rhodes Park where a gang of 12 men drowned two men and raped one woman

Nkabinde said various organisations have expressed outrage at the killing of police, crime and raping of women and children.

“As part of easing tensions and heal the community with an object of promoting a peaceful environment among residents, people from all religious background will engage in prayer and meditation in groups as well as individuals,” Nkabinde said.

Several police officers have been killed while on duty around the country.

About 60 officers have been killed this year, most of them off duty.
