Underdogs show bite in CAF competitions
JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – AN unlikely result has blown the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Confederations Cup Group B wide open.
Congolese side AC Leopards handed Egypt’s Zamalek their first loss at the group phase, a lone goal win in their Group B Day Four clash on Sunday in Dolisie.
Tresor Mukenga Mukendi scored the only goal on 61 minutes denying Zamalek the luxury of qualifying for the last four with two games remaining.
The outcome at the Stade de Municipal left Zamalek atop Group B jointly with South Africa’s Orlando Pirates on nine points but with a better goal difference.
Leopards are on four points with two matches remaining, thus still in with a mathematical chance.
Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates continued their fairytale run with a 2-0 victory over visiting CS Sfaxien at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa on Saturday to enhance their chances of progressing to the semi-final.
In Group A, the match between Stade Malien of Mali and Esperance of Tunisia was abandoned at the Stade du 26 Mars in Mali with the visiting Tunisian team leading 1-0.
Defending champions Al Ahly of Egypt were edged 1-0 by Tunisian side Etoile du Sahel at the Olympic Stadium in Sousse, Tunisia.
The victory propelled Etoile du Sahel to the top of Group A with nine points, although the group remains tight.
Al Ahly are second two points behind.
Malien are on four while Esperance have nothing.
In the Champions League, Democratic Republic of Congo side, TP Mazembe beat Egyptian side Smouha to move closer to the semifinals following a 1-0 victory in a match played at Stade Mazembe in Lubumbashi.
Elsewhere, Al Merreikh of Sudan moved into the second spot following their 2-0 victory over Algerian side Entente Setif in a match played at the Al Merreikh Stadium in Sudan on Sunday.
Prior to the Sunday match, Algerian side MC Eulma beat fellow AlgeriansUSM Alger 0 – 1 in a Group B CAF Champions League strongly contested at Stade Messaoud in Zeghar.
Sudan’s Al Hilal lost 0 – 1 to Moroccan side Moghreb Tetouan in a Group A match played at Al Hilal Stadium in Khartoum, Sudan.
