JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – VISITING Cape Town premiership side, Ajax Cape Town beat highly fancied Orlando Pirates 1-0 to progress to the semifinal of the MTN8 in a tightly contested encounter at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday night.

A solitary strike from unheralded Ndiviwe Mdabuka in the 10th minute was enough to assure the Rodger de Sa coached Ajax Cape Town into the next round of the lucrative tournament at the expense of the Buccaneers.

Though the match was evenly balanced, The Urban Warriors made use of the only slightest opportunity gifted from Orlando Pirates’ defensive error before punishing them.

Defender Tshepo Gumede fumbled with the ball at the back before Mdabuka could strike home from close range to silence a sizeable Orlando Pirates crowd.

Dribbling wizard Sifiso Myeni tried all tricks in the books of football, but always found Ajax Cape Town goal-minder Anssi Jaakkola in uncompromising mood.

Orlando Pirates came into the match bubbling with confidence following 4-3 penalty shoot-out victory over arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the Carling Black Label tournament last Saturday.

In another MTN8 quarterfinal tie, Bidvest Wits beat SuperSport 3-1 to book themselves a ticket into the semi-final as well.

On Wednesday, Kaizer Chiefs will lock horns with Pietermaritzburg United at FNB Stadium while Bloemfontein Celtic fights out with Mamelodi Sundowns in the other remaining quarterfinal slots.
