EXCLUSIVE: New millionaire thought MTN call was a scam

JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – THE two winners of the MTN Quiz4Moola competition appear to have one thing in common- a wariness of scammers.

Durban citizen, Andre Bernard, will bank R1 million after his announcement as the winner of the grand prize in the knowledge-based competition.

Gordon Gcwabaza from Soweto has finished as the runner up and for his efforts, he has won R300 000 in cash and a once-in-a-lifetime, all-expenses paid trip to Disneyland in the United States.

In separate interviews after they were confirmed as winners, the duo admitted the competition organizers, then unbeknown to them, were selling them a dummy.

“I could not believe someone will just call and offer me moola,” said an otherwise elated Bernard.

Gcwabaza concurred.

“When I got a call that I had won I thought it was a scam,” he said.

The reaction by the two winners is understandable in a country where scammers defraud their victims, claiming they had won money in some competition.

Unsuspecting members of the public are coerced to send money upfront to facilitate the processing of the prize.

Legislation such as the Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication-Related Information Act (RICA) have failed to stem the tide.

Meanwhile, Bernard already has an idea how he would spend his windfall.

“I will buy a flat and help my parents pay the bond for their home,” he said.

But for Gcwabaza, it still feels like a dream, hence he has no idea how he will spend the cash.

“It has not sunk in that I have won,” he said.

MTN, the mobile network operator launched the Quiz4Moola competition in March this year.

This knowledge-based competition rewarded customers with points for each correct answer and bonus points for getting a stipulated number of consecutive answers right.

After opting in, contestants received trivia questions on a range of different topics, which include general trivia, science, nature, sports and technology.

For the duration of the competition, participants won daily prizes of R15 000 cash and monthly prizes of R100 000.

Contestants were eligible for a grand prize of R1 million cash regardless of whether they have won either the daily or monthly prize.

“At MTN, we believe that being brainy shouldn’t just be for impressing others. Quiz4Moola has given our subscribers the opportunity to showcase their aptitude and get rewarded for it.

“We are pleased with the enthusiastic feedback we have received from our customers on this competition,” says Larry Annetts, Chief Marketing Officer: MTN South Africa.
