Africa’s education inspirers honoured in Johannesburg

JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – INDIVDUALS and companies that have made an impact in the education have been recognised at an event held in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The inaugural accolades dinner was held at the Gallagher Convention Centre under the auspices of the African EduWeek Awards.
A total of eleven awards, including two accolades were handed out at a glitzy function.
The most lucrative awards went to Mapule Mofokeng, a student, CTI Randburg Campus, who was named the Future Stars Award as well as Lesiba Kwenaite, a teacher at Pirwana Secondary School in Limpopo, who was the winner in the Stars in Education Award.
Other winners were One On One Community Based Programmes (South Africa Supplier of the Year, Basic Education), TSiBA Education NPC, (South Africa Supplier of the Year, Higher Education), Clamber Club, South Africa (Supplier of the Year, Early Childhood Development), Edit Microsystems South Africa (Supplier of the Year, ICT).
Other winners were The Reach Trust, Department of Basic Education & UNICEF (Supplier of the Year, Innovation Product Award), Collect-a-Can, South Africa (Environment Award), SpellAfrica Initiative, Nigeria (Community project of the Year) and Knysna Education Trust, South Africa (NGO of the Year).
A judging panel that chose the finalists and winners from 130 entries comprised leading experts in the education sector, including teachers, NGOs, suppliers and consultants.
Pearson, which has trained over 80 000 teachers in South Africa to date, and continues this professional development ethos through the established Teacher and Lecturer Academies, was the leading sponsor.

The awards dinner was among the highlights of the ninth annual African EduWeek, which is organised by Spintelligent, leading Cape Town-based trade exhibition and conference organiser, and the African office of Clarion Events Ltd, based in the United Kingdom.
