Mbogo, Lodepa win Safaricom bush marathon

NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – ELIJAH Mbogo and Fridah Lodepa have won the 16th edition of the Safaricom Lewa Marathon bush race in Kenya.

They won the men’s and women’s heats respectively under cold weather conditions.

In the men’s category, Mbogo won in 2:20:18 while Moses Wamaitha came second in a time of 2:23:21 with Cyprian Kiogora coming third on 2:24:54.

In the female category, hard running Lodepa won the race in 2:50:26 with Monica Njeru coming second on 2:52:58 while Ripsa Lagat was third on a time of 2:53:25.

The race drew more than 1 200 participants from more than 20 countries.

The Safaricom Lewa Marathon is an annual event used as a catalyst to alleviate poverty, reduce conflict, as well as improve education and livelihoods in rural areas rich in biodiversity.

The Safaricom Lewa Marathon has since inception raised over $4.9 million (about R60 million) raised from wildlife conservation to help eradicate poverty, reduce conflict in the rural areas rich in biodiversity while on the other hand improving both the standards of education and livelihoods.
