SA mission excited by Mozambique potential

JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – SOUTH African companies that participated in the recent Outward Trade and Investment mission to Mozambique expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the exercise.
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) led the mission to Maputo, the capital city, and Tete from June 15-19.
The 23-member business delegation participated in business seminars, business-to-business meetings and site visits during the mission.
The mission targeted businesses from the built environment professionals, electro-technical, mining and capital equipment, railways and steel fabrication, and steel tubing sectors.
The Chief Executive Officer of a lighting and surge protection company, Clearline, Eaghan Lai Thom said he was happy to have been part of the mission. According to him, the mission which was his first afforded him with the opportunity to learn and understand the business environment in Mozambique.
“I had good productive meetings with good quality Mozambican companies during the mission, and as a result acquired an agent that I will work with to have my products penetrate the market,” added Thom.
The General Manager of Business Development Africa at Powertech Daren MacAllister said although Powertech was an established company, platforms like the trade and investment missions were still relevant to the company.
“We have just finalised a R70 000 million deal with a Mozambican company that we will supply with our transformers. We are pleased for big deals like this one as they keep the production line running and sustain jobs,” added MacAllister.
The common issues that delegates were in agreement of were the fact that for them to succeed doing business in foreign countries, particularly Mozambique they needed to form partnerships.
They said the mission had opened business doors and produced good leads which they will follow-up on.
The Counsellor Economic of South Africa to Maputo, Matome Kgowedi said the DTI would continue to provide platforms to enable more presence of South African products in the Mozambique market.
“While we provide these platforms, it is your obligation as businesspeople to follow-up on the leads and contacts you acquired during the mission,” he added.
