JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) –  REIGNING champions Ivory Coast, and hosts, Gabon, have begun preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations Cup (AFCON) 2017 with a goalless draw.

The two nations were inseparable after 90 minutes of football in this friendly international.

The defending champions had a bye in the only three-team group and visited automatic qualifiers Gabon for the friendly minus injured talisman and record four-time African Footballer of the Year, Yaya Toure.

Meanwhile, cash strapped Zimbabwe Warriors beat hosts Malawi 2-1 in the highlight of the weekend.

Zimbabwe, despite travelling by road to Blantyre to Malawi in a tiresome trip, prevailed.

Neighbours South Africa’s Bafana Bafana were held to a disappointing goalless draw by continental lightweights Gambia at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

There was a shock result in Guinea on Friday when the host nation was humiliated 1 – 2 by Swaziland.

Former champions Nigeria beat Chad 2-0 at home after an evenly balanced match.

All but two countries, Eritrea and Somalia, have entered the preliminaries of the competition in a record turnout for the Nations Cup, with 26 qualifiers that took place this weekend.

The winner of each of the 13 groups will qualify for the finals plus the two best runners-up and 2017 hosts Gabon.
