JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – SOUTH African Police Service (SAPS) have identified the five victims who were fatally shot at Alexandra Police Station on Wednesday.

These were identified as Major Thomas Moetlo (59)-a police officer, Sowela Anna Nkuna (age to be verified), Stephina Semenya (52) and Mathews Mabayi (39).

A police officer who allegedly killed the deceased at the police station and was also later shot dead has been identified as Constable Masie (32).

The full names will be obtained at a later stage.

Police said three murder cases and an inquest are being investigated.

On Wednesday evening, a woman, accompanied by two people, arrived at the Alexandra Police Station to report a case of domestic violence against a police constable from the station.

While the matter was attended to, the said constable arrived at the station and proceeded to shoot the complainant, the police official and the two civilians who had accompanied the complainant to the police station. The four died instantly on the scene.

The constable fled the scene on foot after shooting at, and missing, two police officers.

The incident was immediately reported and the police went out looking for him. On arrival at a spot close to his residence, the constable got out of a taxi then noticed the police and started firing shots at them.

The police returned fire, fatally wounding him.

“This incident came as a huge shock to all of us. Our hearts are with the families, colleagues and friends of the deceased. We are going to conduct a thorough investigation.

“We have already informed the Independent Police Investigation Directorate. They are already at the scene,” said the Gauteng Provincial Commissionder, Lt Gen Mothiba.
