ACCRA, (CAJ News) – GHANA is grappling with the rising urban migration amid concern the increasing number of city dwellers would put too much pressure on both government and local authorities.
Ghana has a population of 25 million and the West African nation already projects that more than 22,6 million people will be living in cities by 2030, leaving a mere population of 2,4 million in rural areas or villages.
To address the issue, Ghana’s Deputy President, Paa Kwesi Bekoe, will team up with the World Bank to address the nation on the matter in Accra on Thursday.
World Bank will be represented by their country manager, Amissah-Arthur, who will also officially launch of the report.
In a report by the World Bank, set to be released on Thursday, Ghana’s urbanization is an issue of concern to the government and seeks solutions now to address the looming challenges.
The Report, entitled “Rising through Cities in Ghana”, analyses the rising urbanization challenges and looks at a framework of actions needed to successfully overcome them.
According to the 2010 Population and Housing Census, out of a total population of about 25 million, more than half of Ghana s population lives in urban areas.
It is projected that by 2030, a total of 22,6 million Ghanaians representing about 65 percent of the national population would live in urban areas. Currently, major cities in the country are growing as fast as 4,5 percent per annum.
Over the last three decades, Ghana’s urban population has more than tripled, rising from 4 million to nearly 14 million people, and outpacing rural population growth.
The country is moving steadily and uniformly towards cities and towns, and all regions are experiencing this growth.
Among the line-up of activities for the Thursday launch are presentations, dialogue sessions, video screening and panel discussions by a high profile local and foreign experts and government officials.
