JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – THE National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) expressed shock at plans to lay off thousands of workers.

It was reported the mine was planning to cut 3 500 jobs.

“The NUM has not yet been officially consulted by Lonmin to tell us what exactly is their plan.

“We wish that these job losses can be avoided and as the NUM we will do our best to engage the company to save jobs,” Erick Gcilitshana, NUM Chief Negotiator at Lonmin.

He said would fight against any job losses.

“It is very painful to see that these mining companies make the decisions of cutting jobs easy.”

It is believed the platinum sector had cut 35 000 jobs since 2012.

Lonmin said the move was aimed at cutting costs.

“A further update will be provided with the Company’s Interim Results announcement on Monday, 11 May 2015,” it stated.
