JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – WITH a handful of remaining games before the curtain comes down the Absa Ppremiership, the battle to finish second behind Kaizer Chiefs has intensified.
The fierce contest for the second spot pits Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits.
The Buccaneers, as the side from Orlando is known, are second on the log with 48 points from 28 games, the same points as third placed Mamelodi Sundowns, who to date have played 27 games. Fourth-placed Bidvest Wits have featured in 27 league and garnered 45 points.
A win for Bidvest Wits this Saturday against Mpumalanga Black Aces at Bidvest Stadium in Braamfontein will push them at par with Orlando Pirates and Sundowns making the contest for the second spot exciting.
On the other hand, Sundowns will be away to nemesis Platinum Stars on Saturday at Royal Bafokeng Stadium for a crucial assignment they cannot afford to lose.
Pirates will be facing a stern test in Cape Town against Nedbank Cup finalists Ajax Cape Town at Cape Town Stadium next Wednesday.
Chiefs will just be fulfilling their league fixture against Wits at ease well knowing they have already bagged the biggest prize.
Meanwhile, at the wrong end of the table, bottom-placed Moroka Swallows are involved in a fierce dogfight alongside perennial tail enders Amazulu to stay in the elite league.
Both sides are on 24 points with three games left.
