Downs title defence hopes fade

PRETORIA, (CAJ News) – MAMELODI Sundowns’ little hopes of defending their Absa Premiership title have gone up in smoke.

Their prospects faded on Wednesday night when massacred 5-0 by visiting Bloemfontein Celtic at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria.

The supercharged Celtic grabbed their avalanche of goals through double scorer Frank Mhango, Thapelo Morena, Lerato Lamola and Musa Nyatama to silence the title holders.

The defeat for Sundowns enhanced Kaizer Chiefs’ 13 point lead unassailable. The Soweto giants only need three points in their four remaining matches to be crowned the league title.

Elsewhere, AmaZulu eased their relegation woes by beating Polokwane City 2 – 0 at Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban while Chippa United edged Moroka Swallows 1-0 at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth.

Another relegation-haunted side, Platinum Stars, played to a goalless draw against SuperSport United at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg while Mpumalanga Black Aces dismissed Maritzburg United 1-0 in another league match played at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.
