RUSTENBURG, (CAJ News) – SOUTH Africa’s National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) will on Wednesday embark on a protest march at Helam Mine in Swaartruggens to air a number of grievances.

These include unlawful stoppage of workers from reporting to work, forcing workers to accept retrenchment packages, refusal by the company to grant leave for foreign employees and allegedly forcing employees to go for medical exit although the retrenchment process is not yet finalized.

“The NUM wants to remind Petra Diamond that the mineral mined at Helam mine does not belong to the company but to the state for the benefit of the South Africans.

“The company must bring back the mining licence if it fails to mine,” said an official. Helam Mining is the division of Petra Diamonds situated at Swartruggens in the North Province.Mining officials could not be reached for comment.
