JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – THE Nedbank Cup, said to be the continent’s prime domestic football tournament, swings into action this evening with defending champions Orlando Pirates and Tornado FC involved in one of several David-versus-Goliath duels.
The match is scheduled for Wednesday at the Orlando Stadium in the heart of Soweto.
Mpumalanga Black Aces and Maritzburg United will contest an all-Premiership fixture at the Mbombela Stadium.
On Friday, Amazulu and Golden Arrows will resume their rivalry in another Last 32 fixture.
Kaizer Chiefs, stunned by an end to their unbeaten run at the hands of Supersport United on Tuesday, have a date with African All Stars at FNB Stadium on Friday while Chippa United host Natal United at Wolfson.
First division campaigners Black Leopards and FC Cape Town are at Thouyandou while Phiva Young Stars and Jomo Cosmos will play at Kamhlushwa Stadium on the same day.
Later, Mamelodi Sundowns, the inaugural winners, host Thanda Royal Zulu at Loftus while Bidvest Wits will contest another all-Premiership fixture against Free State Stars in Johannesburg.
Bellevue Winners Park and Vasco da Gama will round off proceedings.
Meanwhile, Sundowns have an opportunity to close the gap on Chiefs when they travel to Amazulu to resume the league next Tuesday.
Chiefs 2-0 loss to Supersport on Tuesday leaves Downs 13 points behind the leaders but with two games in hand.
After Tuesday’s encounter, the PSL has lined up matches including Ajax Cape Town hosting Chippa United on Friday night at the Cape Town Stadium.
The following day, the revitalised University of Pretoria will entertain Black Aces at the Tuks Stadium. Pirates host vastly improved Polokwane City at Orlando Stadium while Maritzburg welcome Free State Stars at their Harry Gwala Stadium in Maritzburg.
