NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – KENYAN athletes have stressed their desire to build on the success secured this past weekend to win the upcoming International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Cross Country Championships scheduled for Guiyang in China.

Ahead of the athletics race scheduled for the Asia country in March, the trio of Madrid Half Marathon winner Peter Emase, hard running Ronald Pkemoi and the newly-discovered marathon runner, Christopher Rutto, were confident of making an impression.

If the results of the North Rift Cross Country Championships at the Iten Grounds this past weekend are anything to go by, the runners are on course for medals in China.

In the men’s 12 km category, Emase came first with Pkemoi and Rutto finishing second and third respectively.

In the senior women’s category for 8km, Irene Chebet emerged the winner with Purity Cherotich and Gladys Chesir to win the race.

Local athletes have been a dominant force in international events over the years and the IAAF World Cross Country Championships are likely to be no exception.
