ACCRA, (CAJ News) – WEST African countries must upgrade their ports to enhance trade with the rest of the globe, a senior Ghanaian official has said.

Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority Director General, Richard Anamoo, said the upgrades would culminate in the countries matching their international counterparts.

His sentiments followed a crucial meeting in Accra, Ghana where West African nations with ports and harbours met to explore ways of improving ports handling, sea trade among other related businesses.

West African countries comprising the host nation Ghana, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Cameroon and and Benin attended alongside international partnering countries participated too.

The international partners included Germany, Portugal, Netherlands, Qatar and United Arab Emirates, who also participated.

Anamoo cited an example for Kenya, which is presently upgrading the Lamu Port as a positive move for Africa.

“West Africa should not be left behind,” he said.
