Ivory Coast sail through to AFCON semisfrom JEAN OSCAR-PIERRE in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea
MALABO, (CAJ News) – FAVOURITES Ivory Coast have filled the last semifinal berth at the 30th Africa Cup of Nations following a 3-1 win over a determined Algeria.
Manchester City-bound striker Wilfried Bony was the hero for the West African side as he netted two awesome headers in each half at the Nuevo Estadio de Malabo in the capital city on Sunday evening with Gervinho striking the killer instinct.
Bony broke the deadlock in the 27th minute when he headed home a cross from the right expertly from close range with the Algerian defence napping.
That was just about all to write home about in a cagey first half.
However, the Algerians got the second half to a flyer as El Arbi Hillel Soudani rifled home from inside the box to draw the North Africans level in the 50th minute.
However, a goal made-in-Manchester in the 69th minute restored Ivory Coast’s lead in the 69th minute as Bony headed in City teammate Yaya Toure’s delivery into the net.
When the match seemed ending on 2-1, Gervinho hammered home with a cheeky volley in the 5th minute of injury time to make 3-1.
Perennial favourites but usual disappointments Ivory Coast thus booked a semifinal berth against Democratic Republic of Congo who knocked Congo 4-2 out this past weekend.
Meanwhile earlier on Sunday, Ghana strolled to a place in the semifinals with a one-sided 3-0 win over West African rivals Guinea.
The Black Stars will face hosts Equatorial Guinea in other Last Four encounter.
