NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – KENYA has unearthed new stars ahead of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Championships.

The World Cross Country event is set for China in March.

Unheralded athlete Peter Emase, shocked veteran long distance runners when he recently won the 10km senior men’s race at the 24th edition of Discovery Kenya cross country meeting at Eldoret Sports Club.

Emase, who was unknown to the media until the shocking victory on Sunday, beat a cluster of veteran marathon athletes comprising Stephen Arita, winner of inaugural Discovery Cross Country Championships.

Among other senior men who fell by the wayside to Emase include former Africa 10 000m champion Kenneth Kipkemoi, Bernard Kipkemoi, Edwin Maiyo and Alex Kibet.

In the junior women category, Sandra Chebet won the 6km race ahead of second-placed Linah Jeruto while the senior women’s title went to Agnes Chebet.

Violah Kibiwott and Purity Cherotich came second and third respectively.
