COSAFA a continental football punching bag
JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – SOUTHERN Africa has again proven to be minnows of the game in the continent after Zambia crashed out of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in the first round, and South Africa are set to follow.
Zambia, who won the AFCON trophy in 2012, were held to a goalless draw by islanders Cape Verde, a move which saw Chipolopolo only manage two points out of a possible nine and finished bottom of Group B.
From the group, Tunisia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) progressed to the quarterfinal stage.
And it could get worse for the region a day after the former champions were knocked out!
Fellow Southern African team, the Bafana Bafana of South Africa, are favourites for elimination ahead of a crucial clash against Ghana on Tuesday.
Bafana Bafana needs an outright victory over the West Africa in order to qualify.
If their performances in Group C are anything to go by, the side could as well inquire when the earliest South African Airways (SAA) flight departs for Johannesburg.
They are rock bottom with a single point.
From the Council of Southern African Football Associations (COSAFA) region, only South Africa and Zambia qualified for the tournament in Equatorial Guinea.
Coincidentally, they are the only sides from the region to have won Africa’s prime football tournament.
