JOHANNESBURG (CAJ News) – A global prodemocracy group representing millions of people has demanded the deployment of United Nations (UN) military forces to fight the Boko Haram terrorists in Nigeria.

The demands by, which represents 40 million people, come amid escalating terror that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced over a million internally.

“With elections looming and violence escalating, Nigeria is like a boiling pot. Politicians have failed their people, and the international community has allowed the situation to deteriorate.

“We cannot wait any longer and with enough backing, a strong UN action could begin to change the game. Let’s make it happen,” the statement sent to this publication read.

“The world has put this crisis in the ‘too hard to solve’ box. The only good news: escalating violence has renewed pressure to act. Let’s multiply that pressure now and persuade our leaders and the United Nations prioritise this crisis (Boko Haram),”read the statement.

The organisation alleged that the Nigeria was deep into a brutal conflict that was ostensibly a Muslim/Christian war, but underlying it were tensions between an “oil-rich”, “corrupt”, “ruling elite” and “a poor”, disenfranchised and neglected North.

“Politicians have fed this divide, and the recent surge in violence comes in the middle of a deadly election campaign.

“Shockingly, President Jonathan’s under-resourced response could be part of a dark game — if there is chaos in the North and low voter turnout, he is more likely to stay in power since his support base is in the South, and strong Northern voter turnout could threaten his re-election.”

To date, Boko Haram is said to control an area the size of Denmark in Europe.

In 2014 alone, it is believed to have killed more than 10 000 people in Nigeria and claimed lives in neighbouring countries.

Recently, the notorious Islamic sect used a 10-year-old girl in a suicide bomb that claimed numerous lives.
