Abubakar warns against deferring elections

from AUGUSTINE OSAYANDE in Abuja, Nigeria
ABUJA, (CAJ News) – FORMER Vice President and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar, warned government against postponing general elections scheduled for next month.

The former Vice President, who returned to the country after a medical vacation, in a statement his media office released, said the call made by the National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki, for a postponement was uncalled for.

It portended a dangerous signal about the intentions of the Federal Government to conduct a free, fair and credible polls, he said.

“Yes, we have a problem with the distribution of PVCs but the position of my party, the APC is that since we have a voters’ register then that should be used in conducting the elections,” said Abubakar.

He also argued there was enough time between now and the elections to issue everyone with their permanent voters card.

Meanwhile, the statement added that the former Vice President was in good health and would be involved in the campaign activities.

“The duty of participating in the process of change which our great party, the APC is committed to supersedes every other consideration.

“For me, participating in this campaign is a call to national duty,” he said.

There have been reports the elections would be shelved owing to the ongoing terror in some parts of the country.
