NAIROBI – SMALL scale farmers in Kenya stand to benefit from a $50 million (Sh4,57 billion) fund from Mastercard Foundation aimed at improving food production.

MasterCard Foundation President, Reeta Roy, said the fund would assist farmers access affordable funds as well as insurance products.

Roy argued that smallholder farmers were finding it difficult to embark on profitable farming due to lack of technological innovations as well as scarce financial resource base.

The Sh4,57 billion is set to help 20 percent of Kenya’s small holder farmers widely believed not to have bank accounts to open them for their savings.
