JOHANNESBURG – ORANGE Africa Cup of Nations title hopefuls, South Africa, are experiencing a mini injury crisis ahead of the tournament starting in Equatorial Guinea this weekend.
No sooner than Patrick Phungwayo withdrew from camp through injury than it was confirmed three players got knocks from the friendly clash against Cameroon and are only expected to be back in action “soon.”
Striker Tokelo Rantie sustained a strained muscle and is being rested as a precaution while defender Rivaldo Coetzee sustained a knock on the knee and is also being rested.
Forward Bernard Parker got a knock on the ribs and is undergoing treatment.
Team Medico, Dr Thulani Ngwenya, confirmed the injuries.
Bafana Bafana, the 1996 champions, resumed training on Monday.
They face Mali in the final preparations match ahead of the AFCON.
The Mali clash will be played on Wednesday January at the Monedan Stadium in Libreville, Gabon.
Kickoff is at 17h00 South African time.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Darren Keet was expected back in camp on Monday evening after going to be with his wife in Belgium following the birth of their first child.
Defender Ayanda Gcaba will only arrive in Libreville on Tuesday night after he was named as a replacement for his injured Orlando Pirates club-mate Phungwayo who has since returned to South Africa to treat his injury.
