PSL prepares for festive, AFCON breaksby SAVIOUS KWINIKA
JOHANNESBURG – THE Premier Soccer League (PSL) will be a hive of activity starting this coming weekend as the teams prepare for the festive season break.
This will be followed by the Africa Cup of Nations-inspired recess.
The continent’s prime football event is scheduled for Equatorial Guinea in January with South Africa among the 16 participants.
This weekend, runaway log leaders Kaizer Chiefs clash with on form Chippa United in match to be played at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday.
Chiefs lead the Premiership league log standings with 37 points from 15 outings while their opponents are on sixth position with 21 points from 14 league games.
Though Amakhosi were held to a 2-2 draw by Platinum Stars on Wednesday, the Soweto giants are yet to lose any league match this season and they look forward to continue holding their own when they meet the Chilli Boys.
Other fixtures that promise fireworks comprise Friday’s encounter between Maritzburg United against AmaZulu- a KwaZulu-Natal derby.
The newly transformed Maritzburg side are placed fifth on log with 21 points from 14 league matches played while AmaZulu anchor the 16-team league log with seven points from 13 games.
On Saturday, defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns will lock horns with city rivals University of Pretoria at the University of Pretoria Stadium in a less prominent derby.
Sundowns are slowly climbing up the ladder as they now occupy third position with 24 points from 14 league matches played to date while their city rivals are on a precarious 13th position with 14 points from 14 league matches.
Another potentially explosive will involve Orlando Pirates and visiting Ajax Cape Town at Orlando Stadium. The two sides are battling for form.
Nonetheless, the Buccaneers as Pirates are affectionately known lie 9th on log with 19 points from 14 league games while Ajax are fourth with 23 points from 15 league matches played.
Elsewhere, Black Aces host Free State Stars in a match expected to go either way while SuperSport United host another side that has tremendously improved, Polokwane City, in a match to be played at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria.
On Sunday, Platinum Stars, bubbling with confidence following their midweek 2-2 draw with log leaders Chiefs, will be motivated to beat Bidvest Wits at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg.
But it will be folly for Stars to underestimate Wits since the Clever Boys have proved their capabilities by beating Ajax Cape Town 4-2 in a midweek match.
Wits are on second position of the league log standing with 26 points from 15 matches while Stars are placed on 12th position with 15 points from 13 league games played.
The last match of the weekend will pit Bloemfontein Celtic against Moroka Swallows in a match which is likely to go either way. Both sides are struggling to for form.
