KAMPALA – A Ugandan housemaid, who was caught on camera assaulting a child she took care of, has appeared in court to answer to charges of torture.

However, the housemaid, identified as Jolly Tumuhiirwe pleaded guilty and asked for forgiveness when she appeared before a City Hall Court saying she was regretting her actions.

The remorseful Tumuhiirwe later apologised to the parents of the baby (of 18 months), the court, country and people across the world who were severely affected by her actions.

Tumuhiirwe has been remanded in prison at Luzira where she awaits sentencing on Wednesday Justice Moses Nabende presided over the case.

The prosecution team led by Jane Akuo Kajuga announced that they preferred new charges of attempted murder against the housemaid.

The clip of Tumuhiirwe beating the baby for not eating quickly enough went viral and caused an uproar on social media.
