NAIROBI – KENYA is preparing to host one of the region’s season-ending athletics event slated for next month in Kisimu.

Long distance athletes from the East African Region (EAR) member states, will contest the event on December 14.

Safaricom, the mobile operator, bankrolls the Kisimu City Marathon, which will see participants drawn from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda compete.

Athletics Kenya (AK) Nyanza North Communications Officer, Jared Gilo, said the registration of competing athletes was on course.

Gilo revealed that winners of the main event would walk away with Sh200 000, first runners-up to pocket Sh100 000 while third winners would receive Sh50 000.

He said there were prizes and awards for the top ten athletes as well as prizes for the domestic contest.

Gilo said the registration started earlier this week with registration fees ranging from Sh200 to Sh500.

“Already, Eritrea have acknowledged receiving our letter and will confirm participation in a week’s time. We are going to make follow up,” Gilo said.
