PRETORIA – THE South Africa-German Business Forum, aimed at enhancing trade relations between the two countries, is ongoing in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The conference takes place on the side-lines of the eighth session of the South Africa-Germany Bi-National Commission.

Germany is South Africa`s major trading and investment partner in the European Union.

The economic relations between the two countries are governed by the EU and SA, Trade, Development and Cooperation agreement, institutionalized in 1999 which is a free trade agreement that gives over 90 percent of South Africa`s goods a duty free access to the European Union markets, while in return South Africa granted a duty free status to over 80 percent of EU imports.

During the period 2009 to 2013, the overall trade between the two countries has generally been fairly positive, with total trade growing by 11,43 percent annually.
