Kenya parents against polio vaccination exercise
from MARIA MACHARIA in Nairobi, Kenya
NAIROBI – THE religious principles versus scientific medicines war has reared its ugly head again in Kenya where parents have refused to have their children vaccinated during the ongoing polio vaccination campaign.
Last week, police and medical personnel had an uphill task to persuade a swearing mother, who was hiding her children from vaccination last weekend at Kibunga and Kirocho villages in Tharaka Nithi County.
As if that was not enough, most parents in the area, upon receiving the news that health officers were coming to the area, fled their homes.
Those present were reported to have sworn against the health professionals arguing that the modern medicine would expose their children to death.
“We rely on God for protection. We do not need any medical intervention,” one parent in the Kavonokia Church sect was quoted as saying.
However, health officials pleaded with them explaining that the move was aimed at giving their children protection from polio.
“Parents of the sect had hidden their children in the farms and were monitoring the moves of the medical officers. Diseases do not target religion or community’s beliefs.
“We will ensure they all get the polio vaccine,” a health medical officer said.
