JOHANNESBURG – THE Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the nominees for the 2014 African Player of the Year and the 2014 African Player of the Year (Based in Africa).

A total of 25 players have been nominated for the topmost Player of the Year, and 20 for the Player of the Year (Based in Africa) category.

Among those nominated is murdered South African goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa.

The national team and Orlando Pirates captain was shot dead east of Johannesburg late October during a botched robbery.

The winners of the two categories will be decided by votes from the Head Coaches/Technical Directors of the National Associations affiliated to CAF.

The Awards Gala will take place on January 8 in Lagos, Nigeria.

Ivorian Yaya Toure was crowned African Player of the Year for the past three years whilst Mohamed Aboutreika of Egypt was named African Player of the Year (Based in Africa) last year.
