ACCRA – ANGLOGOLD Ashanti, Ghana’s largest gold mining company, is set to retrench more than 5 000 workers next week due to viability challenges.

AngloGold Ashanti and the workforce are in agreement on the retrenchment strategy including the packages the workers would take home after losing their jobs.

Out of a 6 000 total workforce for AngloGold Ashanti at Obuasi Mine, only 700 will remain engaged with the mine, but working on early performance-based renewable contract.

Company employees confirmed AngloGold Ashanti would effect the retrenchment next week with a total of $220 000 expected to be channeled towards the retrenchment exercise.
