JOHANNESBURG – TRAGEDY has struck South African football following the murder of national team and Orlando Pirates captain, Senzo Meyiwa.

Unknown gunmen shot and killed the 27-year-old in what is suspected to be an armed robbery in Vosloroos in Ekurhuleni on Sunday evening.

He was announced dead on arrival in hospital.

Pirates and police were scheduled to provide further details on the death of Meyiwa later on Monday.

Police confirmed the death of the popular goalkeeper and are offering a reward of R150 000 for information that will lead to the arrest of the KwaZulu-Natal born goalkeeper.

His death came when his career had been on a high.

His imperious form between the posts earned him the captain’s armband for both club and country.

Meyiwa’s came a day after he helped his Pirates side to the semifinals of the Telkom Knockout at the expense of Ajax Cape Town.

His death has overshadowed the Soweto Derby pitting Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at First National Bank Stadium on Saturday.
