JOHANNESBURG – THE opposition to the controversial electronic-tolling system will on Tuesday take a new dimension when the African National Congress (ANC) makes a submission to a review panel.
The ANC Gauteng provincial leadership, led by its chairman Paul Mashatile and his secretary, Hope Papo, is set to make a submission to the Gauteng Legislature.
While the ANC national leadership, spearheaded by Secretary General, Gwede Mantashe, is calling for the province to pay for the multi-billion e-tolls, the ANC Gauteng vehemently opposes the move arguing that it would worsen the financial burden for motorists.
Already the ANC Gauteng province made its intentions clear at its recent Provincial Conference they opposed e-tolls.
ANC Gauteng provincial spokesman, Dumisa Ntuli, confirmed the opposition.
“The ANC must always be on the side of the people and understand community concerns. We must know that urban space in Gauteng is a precious commodity and we can only use it more efficiently with better infrastructure.
“Therefore promoting sustainable infrastructure and an integrated transport system is imperative for economic vitality of the Gauteng Province.
“The ANC submission must help the Province to ameliorate the problem of the current system of e-tolling and find lasting solutions that will create a conducive environment for road users and communities,” Ntuli said.
