JOHANNESBURG – THE Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Mining Industry Awards will be a hotly-contested affair.
Randgold Resources, Kamoto Copper Company, Tenke Fungurume and MMG are some of the leading names in mining that have been nominated for the inaugural awards, whose winners will be announced at a gala dinner ceremony during iPAD DRC Mining & Infrastructure Indaba on 22 October in Kinshasa.
“The response from the industry has been overwhelming and each and every category is hotly contested, from Mining Company of the Year to Best Social Investment, Lifetime Achievement and Environmental Management,” said iPAD DRC Event Director, Nicole Smith.
She said it would be a challenging task choosing the eventual winners.
“We have received dozens and dozens of entries. And what is gratifying is that the nominated companies and individuals have all made such important contributions to the mining sector in the DRC over the last decade.
“The judges have a tough job choosing the final winners, I do not envy them.”
Nominated for the Lifetime Achievement Award are Mark Bristow (Chief Executive of Randgold Resources), Frederick Davidson (President & CEO of Energold Drilling Corp), Jillian D’Urso (Senior Advisor – Stakeholder Relations of MMG), Jean-Félix Mupande (Director General of Cadastre Minier) Guy Nzuru (General Manager of Ivanhoe Mines DRC SARL), Claude Polet (Managing Director of Tenke Fungurume), Michel Santos (Social Development Manager of MMG), Deven Shiganla (CEO of Rutu Technology), Simon Tuma Waku (Vice President of Chambers of Mines) and Louis Watum, the Director General of Kibali Gold Project.
Best performer in Environmental Management nominees consist of Energold Tenke Fungurume, Ivanplats Mutanda and Mining Randgold Banro.
The iPAD DRC Mining & Infrastructure Indaba remains the only mining focused event in the DRC and the region.
It still enjoys the support and input from the government and the industry.
Last year, the conference and exhibition welcomed more than 500 attendees.
