ABUJA – THE Nigerian senate has approved President Goodluck Jonathan’s request for a loan of $1 billion to tackle insecurity in the country.

The approval was given after the report of the Joint Committee on Finance, Local and Foreign Debt was presented by the Committee Chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi.

The Committee in its report recommended that the Senate approved the request in kind to tackle the ongoing security challenges in the country.

Although some Senators stressed the need to follow guidelines on borrowing, Makarfi and the Senate President, David Mark urges the Senators to be mindful of the security implications of the request.

After a robust debate, the Senate President put the request to vote leading to the approval.
