Prime CIOs, IT executive convention opens in Cape Town

CAPE TOWN – MORE than 1 000 attendees, mostly chief information officers (CIOs) and industry executives, have converged in Cape Town,
South Africa for the Gartner Symposium / IT Xpo Africa 2014.

A series of what is said to be the world’s most important gatherings of
CIOs and senior information technology executives, the event is the
innovation of Gartner, the American-based world leading IT research and
advisory firm.

The local symposium will be held until Friday under the theme, “Driving
Digital Business.”

at the Cape Town International Conference Centre Centre (CTICC) on

She noted that the symposium was part of a series of eight such events
that will be held around the world.

Other legs are later scheduled for Australia, Brazil, Japan, India, Spain,
United States, following a previous one that was held in the United Arab
Emirates in April. Overall, the event attracts 24 000 attendees including
7 000 CIOs.

“We are honoured to be among the first markets to receive the latest
insights from Gartner. It is an exciting time to be an IT professional now, especially in a dynamic market such as Africa.

“The market has an untapped potential that has not gone unnoticed,” Jacobs said in Cape Town.

She noted that the symposium was held on the back of research suggesting
the vast opportunities in the local markets considering that seven of the
10 fastest growing economies were in the continent.

Jacobs added in her presentation that more than half the world’s mobile
money services were in Africa, local mobile subscription rates would
exceed 1 billion by 2017, while by 2040, Africa would boast the biggest

Meanwhile, more than 20 companies are exhibiting at an expo that is
running simultaneously to the symposium.
