Mugabe to assume SADC, AU leadership
from MARCUS MUSHONGA in Harare, Zimbabwe
HARARE – ZIMBABWE President Robert Mugabe is set to assume the Southern African Development Community (SADC) chairmanship next week.
This will come a few months before the veteran leader assumes the chairmanship of the African Union (AU).
The SADC summit kicks off on August 8-9 with a finance sub-committee meeting leading the way before the standing committee meeting of senior officials scheduled for August 10-12 .
After the standing committee meeting, a council of ministers meeting follows on August 14-15 before the Summit of Heads of State and Governments taking place on August 17-18.
“As a country (Zimbabwe), we must grab the opportunities that come with the holding of this position (SADC chairmanship), and make fully use of it in order to benefit our country and the entire region.
“We would not want to see the tenure that would be spent people throwing insults at one another,” said an official.
It remains to be seen how the West will react to Mugabe and Zimbabwe’s chairmanship of the AU considering the frosty relations between Zimbabwe and Western nations over the years.
