JOHANNESBURG – A house in Orkney collapsed while a nearby school was damaged following a 5.3 magnitude earth tremor hit some parts of Johannesburg in the Gauteng Province on Tuesday.
Spokesperson for Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS), Tommy Deysel, confirmed the tremor but hinted that the situation was under control.
While there were reports of casualties or injuries, the minor earthquake left residents shell-shocked.
“I was busy writing on my laptop when the table my computer was resting on fell. Everything else in the building started shaking. It lasted for 15 minutes,” Senzo Ngcobo told CAJ News.
Silindile Mkhize of Bramley said: “I thought the world was coming to an end.”
Another resident, Sibanengi Dube, wrote on his Facebook,: “The earth vibration rattled windows sending shoppers and onlookers into shock. No casualties were experienced.
“But l am driving out of town as l post this message. Panicking shop owners are closing shop to get out of potential disaster area.”
