Scores perish in Zim road accident

MASVINGO – AT least 16 people have died in horrific traffic accident in the
Masvingo-Beitbridge highway in Zimbabwe.
Witnesses told CAJNews that 15 people died on the spot when a Mercedes Benz commuter bus collided head-on with a truck, while another died on admission at Neshuro Hospital.
Ten people were seriously injured.
The commuter bus was traveling from Beitbridge while the UD truck according to witness was traveling towards Beitbridge.
Witnesses said that the UD truck encroach into the lane of an oncoming vehicle resulting in the deadly head on collision.
Some of the injured people were taken to Neshuro Hosspital before being transferred to Masvingo General Hospital while others where taken to Beitbridge hospital.
Sources said that some of the critically injured were transferred to Bulawayo.
Masvingo Provincial Affairs Minister, Kudakwahse Bhasikiti, visited the scene of the accident on Monday.
Police in Masvingo confirmed the tragedy but refused to give details arguing that information was still very sketchy at the time of goingto press.
Zimbabwean roads have become death traps because of huge potholes.
Despite the introduction of toll gates in the country no meaning repairing of roads has been done.
Recently, the government increase toll gates fees by about a 1 000 in a move the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human have opposed at the courts.
