NAIROBI – TRADITIONAL long distance running favourites, Kenya, have won gold medal in the 800-metre men’s International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Junior Championships in Eugene, Oregon in the United States.

Fresh from the World Relay races, Alfred Kipketer won Kenya’s gold in 1:43.95 while fellow countryman Joshua Tiampati Masikonde settled for silver in 1:45.14.

Both Kipketer and Masikonde went into the 800 metre race to restore the country’s pride following poor start to the competition.

It came as no surprise when the duo separated themselves from the pack as they led the group in the first 200 metres before holding on to the final leap.

The hard-running Kipketer won similar gold accolade here in 2013, and this year again, he has done it for his country with a convincing winning time.

Kipketer was part of Kenya’s 4x800m winning team at the recent IAAF World Relays in Nassau.
