JOHANNESBURG – ORLANDO Pirates Football Club are the new Carling Black Label Cup champions after a marathon penalty shoot-out victory over Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday.
Pirates emerged 6-5 victors after the teams finished goalless in 90 minutes of regulation time.
George Maluleka was the villain for Chiefs as he missed during regulation time and the shoot-out.
Earlier, there was action as early as the first minute when Chiefs midfielder Reneilwe Letsholanyane’s shot was deflected for a corner.
However, the half was generally a lukewarm affair with the teams struggling to shed the pre-season rust.
The second half was end-to-end action culminating in Chiefs winning a penalty following a crude tackle on George Lebese.
His namesake Maluleka crashed the spot-kick against the crossbar.
With either side failing to find the net, it had to be decided through the dreaded shootouts with Thabo Matlaba scoring the decider.
