Lack of land stalls Ghana airport expansion
from MASAHUDU KUNATEH in Accra, Ghana
ACCRA – LAND encroachers have scuttled plans to expand the local Kumasi airport into an international one, a cabinet official has said.
The Deputy Minister of Transport, Bawah Mogtari, said instead, government was transforming the facility in Tamale as land was available to carry out the project.
“The US$100 million dollar Tamale airport project is being undertaken because of land availability,” she said.
She however said the government would still go ahead with plans to upgrade the Kumasi Airport into an international one, land permitting.
The Ghana Airports Company is already upgrading the existing runway at the facility.
Mogtari added there well also plans to construct a new terminal at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) to take pressure off the other terminals.
“Adverts will soon be placed for the construction of a new terminal at the KIA. This terminal, to be known as Terminal 3, will take pressure off Terminal 2 so that rehabilitation of that terminal can take off in earnest,” she said.
