Nigerian diplomat hails Zim literacy levels
from MERCY MUJURU in Harare, Zimbabwe
HARARE – AN outgoing Nigeria envoy in Zimbabwe hailed the host country’s high literacy rate saying it was enhancing the economic development of the continent.
Ambassador Mamman Nuhu, said by having the highest literacy rate in the continent, Zimbabweans had the capacity to resuscitate their country’s economy.
At the moment, Africa, he said was benefitting from the Southern African country’s literacy.
“Zimbabwe has the highest literacy rate in Africa, which is very important and that is why their experts are everywhere, including Nigeria,” said Nuhu.
He said many Zimbabwean professionals were dominating and holding key managerial positions in various sectors of economy in both Nigerian and South African companies, among other countries, a move he said was a clear confirmation of the quality of the Zimbabweans’ education and high literacy.
“We have a lot of Zimbabwean experts working in various fields in Nigeria. Others are self employed while some are working in managerial roles for South African companies operating in Nigeria. They are doing an excellent job,” Nuhu said.
Zimbabwe is ranked the country with the highest literacy in the continent ahead of Tunisia.
However, over the recent years, the country has lost some of its skilled professionals following economic and political crises.
A high number have braved these challenges and retained their jobs.
