Celtic clinch Charity Showdown

Bloemfontein player tussles for possession with AmaZulu

JOHANNESBURG – BLOEMFONTEIN Celtic Football Club have been crowned the inaugural Charity Showdown champions after defeating Amazulu at Bidvest Stadium in Johannesburg.

Two second-half goals by Vuyani Ntanga and Gabadinho Mhango secured Celtic the win that augments their preparations for the new season.

Substitute Ntanga finished coolly in the 72nd minute moments after he came on.

Mhango killed the game as a contest in the 84th minute.

Watched by an appreciative crowd, the first half was a lukewarm affair characterized by half chances and solid goalkeeping.

The second stanza, amid the slightly chilly conditions at the compact venue, had failed to produce clear-cut chances until the Celtic pair finally got it right.

Celtic had booked a berth in the final by dismissing hosts Bivest Wits 1-0 in the first semifinal.

A similar win margin saw Amazulu dismiss Mpumalanga Black Aces 2-1 in the other match.

A total of R150 000, as well as the gate-takings for the day, were donated to the Lunchbox Fund, a nationwide charity that feeds thousands of impoverished schoolchildren in South Africa.
