BREAKING NEWS: Insurgents wreck havoc in Borno town
from AUGUSTINE OSAYANDE in Abuja, Nigeria
ABUJA – SCORES of people have been killed after alleged Boko Haram terrorists attacked Damboa in the Borno State.
According to witnesses, the insurgents made the most of the lack of security in the area to wreck havoc.
A member of the youth vigilante group in Maiduguri told journalists the
massacre happened at dawn on Friday.
He said only a handful of youth vigilante group, known as Civilian Joint
Task Force and some few vigilante officials were available in Damboa to
offer protection as both military and security personnel reportedly
deserted the town after another recent attack.
Two weeks ago, terrorists laid siege on Damboa, killing an unspecified
number of people.
According to reports, insurgents who ambushed the town rebuffed plans by
the military to return since the attack.
Some security personnel are said to have returned to Maiduguri, the state
capital after they were overpowered.
“Since the attack in Damboa, there are no police or soldiers to enhance
security,” said a vigilante member.
“Only the vigilantes are there and we know their limitations. The death
casualty could be very high because my contacts in Damboa said they are
still picking and piling the corpses, but many houses, nearly half of what
remains of the several earlier attacks on the town has been burnt.”
A senior security officer, who spoke anonymously, confirmed the attack.
There are currently no details on the extent of the damage and casualty
figures are not known yet,” he said.
