JOHANNESBURG – THE Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, congratulated the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, and the country after the team won 2014 edition of FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
Germany beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time.
“The German team’s spectacular performance is a reflection of success built on a solid foundation of great determination, refined skills set, team discipline and being tenacious,” Zuma said.
She also congratulated Argentina for finishing second.
The AU Commission Chairperson meanwhile commended the five African teams at this year’s tournament for representing the African continent, in particular the Algerian and Nigerian teams who progressed to the second phase of the tournament.
Cameroon, Ghana and Ivory Coast fell at the first hurdle.
Dlamini Zuma encouraged AU Member States to reflect on the overall performance of African teams at the world tournament with the aim of striving to progress beyond the quarter finals, as the world prepares for Russia in 2018.
