ACCRA – GHANA’S inflation rate has marginally increased to 15 percent for June.

According to the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) this indicated a 0,2 percent from the previous month.

This rate of inflation for June 2014 is the percentage change in the CPI over the twelve-month period, from June 2013 to June 2014.

The year-on-year non-food inflation rate for June 2014 was 20,3 percent compared to the 20 percent recorded for May 2014.

The year-on-year food inflation rate for June 2014 was 7,9 percent, a fall of 0,1 percentage point from the 8.0 percent recorded for May.

The Government Statistician, Philomena Nyarko, attributed the rise in June inflation to the rising prices of housing, water, electricity, gas and transport which all made up the non-food component of the CPI basket.

She was quick to add that the price drivers for the food inflation rate were mineral water, soft drinks, fruit juices, coffee, tea and cocoa.

Nyarko noted that the year-on-year inflation rate for imported items (19,1 percent) was about one and half times higher than the inflation rate for locally produced items (13,5 percent).

On regional inflation, the Upper East Region with the highest regional year-on-year inflation rate of 18,3 percent above the national inflation (15 percent) and the Volta Region recorded the lowest of 13n1 percent.
